Dear ABC Student Group Leaders,

It was a pleasure to present to you during our semesterly town hall. Last year, I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant collages you submitted for your groups - and I look forward to this semester’s submissions in our town hall slides

Like the previous newsletters, this one contains many updates: the link to our new website, information on Columbia Sites, a new special interest representative appointment (Welcome Celeste!), Barnard space announcements, town hall recap., and a general announcement regarding the Columbia Bedework event management system.

We are happy to also announce that group recognition has been extended one week, from Oct. 15th to Oct. 22nd. Please share these pages with your fellow student group leaders and aspiring student group leaders: https://abc.studentgroups.columbia.edu/content/new-group-recognition; we wish to ensure that every potential new student group has a fair opportunity to be recognized.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself ([email protected]), our-eboard ([email protected]), or our representatives for assistance.

Good luck with midterms.

Sincerely,

Theodore M. Nelson
ABC President

Website Update

Please make note ABC has transitioned to a Columbia website: https://abc.studentgroups.columbia.edu. Our Squarespace website is now offline - and contains outdated information; please do not revive it with the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

Instead, please bookmark our new website, send it to your e-board chats, and have it somewhere where it is easily accessible.

Special thanks to ABC Technology Director Dennis Zhang ([email protected]) for his tireless work migrating the website.

Columbia Sites Feedback

If your group is interested in migrating to a columbia.edu domain, please find more details at this address: https://studentgroups.columbia.edu/

If your group has already migrated and wishes to provide feedback, please contact [email protected] directly. We will be establishing a working group during the next month to meet with Columbia Sites developers and provide direct feedback.

Club ReFuel Notice

All four e-board members from each student group are required to complete this process. At this juncture, you should have completed Club ReFuel. If your group has not completed this required process, please make sure to let your ABC representative know - and be in contact with your USL advisor to make arrangements for your specific situation.

Special Interest Representative

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Celeste Lamadrid ([email protected]) as the next special interest representative!

Celeste Lamadrid (SEAS’26) is serving as the Special Interest Group Representative for the 2023-2024 academic year. Celeste is currently the President of the Columbia University Minecraft Club (CMC), Secretary of the Columbia University Robotics Club (CURC), and Co-Lead of the Pacbot Subteam for Robotics Club. She also has involvement in Columbia Space Initiative and EcoReps. Celeste is an avid enjoyer of movies, video games, and getting lost in the youtube algorithm! As Special Interest Representative, she hopes to bring a vibrant and fun flair to campus by supporting clubs that foster diverse interests and provide an inviting community.

ABC Representative Vacancies

The board has one upcoming vacancy, in the category of Performance. Please see the groups these categories represent within the updated Allocations sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yis4KxmgmgBQgQB94J6HN-nrNxLp3babNywHrgQHMwk/edit?usp=sharing

Please request access to the application form at the following address: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Afncmg1jnurigY9BnadczVkQnsTWubyF_ryGRjwsrd0/edit?usp=sharing

Applications are due by the end of the month: November 1st at 8:00 p.m. EDT. All candidates should expect to attend that ABC meeting on the same date from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. EDT.

ABC will host an election for each position, whereby each group e-board leader within the relevant category receives one vote. Candidates will have two weeks to campaign for their roles.

Announcement regarding Barnard Spaces [language by the Barnard Student Experience and Engagement Office]

Barnard requires at least 28 days notice for student group reservations in event spaces only, and the November 7 deadline for requests, that only gives groups a few days to submit requests for programs. Barnard Events Management is happy to take event requests that fall within 28 days but occur before November 7 on a case by case basis (provided that they are at least 2 weeks out and we can support). Noting that for activities in classrooms where no additional support is needed, there would be no cut-off date and therefore, no compressed timeline.

Town Hall RECAP

Thank you for your attendance at town hall. Please find the slideshow at this address; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qQztvY7CfuW30FsQNZBFPPMUosCeDbyX/view?usp=sharing

Representatives will be reaching out to groups that did not attend town hall. Groups who do not respond to these inquiries or proactively reach out to [email protected] will be considered for derecognition.

Additionally, we would love what your group has been working on! As announced all groups are required to make a slide based on their fall programming: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1MGl-jXOeRjPcXCWPhf3BkEfmH4P5m6yL/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=114033883868604300579&rtpof=true&sd=true

Please submit this by November 15th, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. EDT!

NGR/RGR

Columbia Bedework

Are you interested in planning events with the official Columbia events calendar? Email your advisor to set up a Columbia Bedework calendar (https://events.columbia.edu/admin/).

Bedework allows for ticketing, in the same manner as EventBrite. However, there are two primary advantages: 1.) all ticket sales are directly collected within your group’s chartstring as revenue and 2.) ticket sales are subject to a 3% transaction fee, as opposed to 6% through EventBrite.

Please reach out to your USL advisor to set this up for your group.

E-Board Changes

If your leadership changes during the semester, please make sure to fill out ABC’s e-board update form to ensure a continuity in directly communications: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeMLXlCNptwy8q4OdU6tnGmQ1nnKtQvHHZmwbav-d0dBJqDXg/viewform

New leaders can receive immediate access to the newsletter by subscribing to the following listserv: https://listserv.cuit.columbia.edu/scripts/wa.exe?SUBED1=ABC_LEADERS

ABC Co-sponsorships

We continue to maintain a co-sponsorship pool for the FY23-24 school year: https://forms.gle/VMhqEyYFEfKCHAmSA

Your ABC representatives have the opportunity to present co-sponsorship requests during our weekly Wednesday meetings.

A notable difference from the previous year is a change in our co-sponsorship reimbursement process. ABC will provide award letters, which will be reimbursed directly to student groups once documentation and receipts for the program are received by both your ABC representative and ABC e-board ([email protected]), according to the exact amount within the receipts and relevant ABC spending guidelines. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
